Heat, hot water restored at Nashville prison

Heat and hot water are working again at a Nashville prison after the boiler stopped working earlier this week.

According to a release from the Department of Correction, the boiler at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution went offline on New Year's Day.

Staff members passed out additional blankets and installed temporary heating units. The portable units are now being removed.

TDOC said a valve malfunction is believed to be responsible for the problem.

"The safety, security, and comfort of our offenders and staff is paramount, and we are greatly appreciative of their understanding and cooperation while repairs have been made," said Assistant Commissioner of Operations Bobby Straughter. “I’d also like to thank our dedicated maintenance staff for their hard work around the clock in extreme conditions."
