Northwest Airlines on strike watch - WMC Action News 5 - Memphis, Tennessee

Northwest Airlines on strike watch

Thousands of travelers around the country are worried that their travel plans could be affected if Northwest Airlines mechanics go on strike.

The two sides are in mediated talks in Washington, but there's little word on whether progress is being made. Mechanics could legally strike as early as 11:01 p-m (central daylight time) Friday if there is no agreement.

Northwest has a hub at Memphis International Airport.

If there is a strike, the airline has promised as little disruption as possible to its flights. But delays could disrupt travelers making connections for cruises or other scheduled vacation plans.

Travel agents say more and more customers are making alternate plans as the strike date approaches.

Northwest plans to use replacement workers if mechanics strike.

They company also says it might be flexible with fare rules or rebook passengers on other airlines if there are irregular operations during a flight.
