MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A Memphis police officer was stabbed trying to detain a man Tuesday night.
The exchange happened on Carrington Road, near Greer Street and Park Avenue, around 8 p.m.
The suspect's mother called police for help when her son was behaving erratically and she needed help.
Officers said the 33-year-old man ran inside away from officers and started throwing fireworks at them.
Memphis Police Director Mike Rallings said officers tried to use a taser on the suspect, but it had no effect. While attempting to detain the man, a 39-year-old Crisis Intervention Training officer was stabbed in the upper torso.
The officer was hospitalized in critical condition, but has improved and is expected to be OK.
Police said the suspect is in custody, but no charges have been filed.
