Operation Blue Crush a success

Memphis Police and the Shelby County Sheriff's Department hit the streets Thursday night, rounding up dozens of suspects wanted for a number of crimes.

The action was part of a new joint initiative dubbed Operation Blue CRUSH: Crime Reduction Utilizing Statistical History. The program was developed with help from the University of Memphis. Statistical information from the university helped police more accurately pinpoint where crimes will occur, what types of crimes will happen, and even where supects live.

Thursday night's Blue Crush saturation set a Memphis police record for the most arrests in any one night sweep in department history.

Official numbers from the Memphis Police Department List a total of 162 arrests made and 369 traffic tickets issued.  Of the 162 arrests, 112 were actual physical arrests, 43 were misdemeanor citations issued, and 7 were city ordinance summons issued.

More saturations are planned for the near future. Most of those arrested in Thursday night's sweep were taken to the Central Precinct.
