Former Germantown High Star Shakes off Hurricane to Shine in Major League Debut

Just hours after hearing his home near Biloxi sustained only minor damage from Hurricane Katrina, former Germantown High Star Paul Maholm had quite a Major League debut last night for the Pittsburgh Pirates against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Maholm, who played collegiately at Mississippi State, pitched 8-shutout innings, and even got his first Major League Hit in the game.

More importantly, he also gets his first Big League Victory, going 8-innings a 6-nothing shutout.

He strikes out 5 while allowing 4-hits and no walks.

The Pirates first round draft pick in 2003, Maholm now lives in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, just across Back Bay from Biloxi.

That entire area was devastated by the Hurricane, but his in-laws called to say Maholm's house was not destroyed.
