ASU Players Tops in Sun Belt Defense



            JONESBORO, Ark.—Sophomore safety Tyrell (pronounced TIE-RELL) Johnson was selected as the Sun Belt Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week after his strong performance against Missouri on Saturday.

            Johnson (6-1, 197) produced another solid performance in his 12th consecutive start for the Indians.  Johnson ended the game with 12 total tackles (nine solo, three assisted), caused and recovered a fumble and had an interception he returned 20 yards.

            The interception was the fifth of Johnson’s career at ASU and has now reached double figures in tackles in four games.  Johnson also has three other games where he tallied nine tackles

            A second team All-Sun Belt Conference selection at the end of the 2004 season and a second team Freshman All-America pick by, a website that is a primary outlet for the Football Writer’s Association of America.  This is the first time in Johnson’s career that he has been selected for an in-season honor from the SBC.
