TennCare cuts affect prescriptions

A month into widespread cuts to TennCare rolls and benefits, some pharmacists and doctors say limits on prescription drug coverage are forcing some people to choose which of their ailments to treat.

Before the cuts that took place August first, TennCare provided unlimited prescription coverage. The public healthcare program now pays for two name brand and three generic drugs per month for adults. The limits don't apply to approximately 97-thousand residents classified as "medically needy."

Phil Bradley at Bradley Drug Company in Nashville says the state is saving money, but it's at the expense of patients' health.

At Southside Drug in Springfield, owner Don Sloan calls August the toughest month of his career, saying his pharmacists have been working twice as hard and filling fewer prescriptions.
