UPDATE: Missing Thomson teen found dead, body has been positively identified

THOMSON, GA (WFXG) -

Update: May 16, 2018 From the Georgia Bureau of Investigation: The body located in Thomson on Monday, May 14, 2018, has been positively identified as Daekwon Hines. Hines’ body was discovered in a wooded area off Dell Drive around 2:30 PM Monday.

Hines had been reported missing by his family since Friday, May 11, 2018. An autopsy was performed this morning at the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur and preliminary results indicate that Hines died as a result of a gunshot wound. The manner of death has been ruled a homicide.

The investigation is being investigated by the GBI, Thomson Police Department, and the McDuffie County Sheriff’s Office. Anyone with information is asked to call the GBI at 706-595-2575, the Thomson Police Department at 706-595-2166, or the McDuffie County Sheriff’s Office at 706-595-2040.

A 14 year-old boy was shot in the leg at Thomson Villas Apartments in Thomson around 2pm May 6th. According to the Thomson Police Department they have two suspects in custody.

Less than a week later 17 year-old Daekwon Hines went missing. Family members said the two were best friends. The shooting is being investigated by the Thomson Police Department and Georgia Bureau of Investigation in connection with the discovery of a body found today.

When the body was found in a wooded area on Dell Drive Monday afternoon the family said they are sure that's their boy, Daekwon Hines. Officers could not give more details of either case.
 


Update: May 14, 2018: 6:03 pm: Family has confirmed that a body which was found belongs to missing teen, 17-year-old Daekwon Hines, last seen in the 400 block of Bussey Avenue around 6:00 p.m. on May 10.  According to family, he just turned 17 on May 7. 

Around 2:45 p.m, the Thomson police department was contacted to look at a wooded area. They arrived at the 500 block of Dell Drive and searched the woods. A body was found in the woods and the coroner was called. We are awaiting autopsy results.

McDuffie County authorities need your help finding a missing teen. Thursday, 16-year-old Daekwon Hines was last seen in the 400 block of Bussey Avenue around 6p.m., according to the police department.

His grandmother called the Thomson Police Department (TPD) Friday. When asked if authorities believe foul play is involved, TPD Investigator Robert Brown said, “I am looking at all possibilities.”

He said he does not think Daekwon ran away. The teen is described as being 5’6’’ tall and weighing 120 pounds. His family said he was wearing blue jeans and a dark black shirt with KFC written in green letters. 

TPD Police Chief John Seay told WFXG getting people to talk has been difficult. “We have really hit a stone wall getting someone to come forward saying ‘this is what we know’”, Chief Seay said.
