Mid-South hostage freed in Iraq

A Mid-South man held hostage in Iraq was freed Wednesday.

A military unit stormed the farmhouse where Cordova homeowner Roy Hallums was being held and rescued him.

As friends and relatives gathered at Hallums' home, neighbors like Charles Armstrong were overjoyed that Hallums had been rescued.

"Its an emotional thing for somebody that close to them...living that close to them," he said.

Gunmen kidnapped Hallums 10 months ago, while he was in Iraq to help with rebuilding efforts. In a video released by his captors, Hallums pleaded for help.

For weeks, relatives pleaded through the media for Hallums release. Wednesday in Cordova, his daughter expressed relief that her father had been rescued.

"She was excited," Armstrong said, "She was just saying her dad was coming home. There wasn't much I could say to her because I know she was on cloud nine."

Officials have not yet said when Hallums will return to the Mid-South.
