JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

Much of downtown Jonesboro was affected Wednesday by a power outage, including the Craighead County Courthouse-Election Annex.

Craighead County Clerk Kade Holliday said the outage affected voting for about 45 minutes.

The outage led them to activate their Disaster Recovery Plan. Ten people were at the facility waiting to cast their ballots when the power went out.

“The machines actually have batteries built into them and you have to go through a process to get ready for that and then instead of checking people in on a computer, we switched to our backup tablets and we were able to continue with the election,” Holliday said.

The Secretary of State's office highly suggests having a backup plan during election season.

Holliday said their plan paid off, voting continued and operations returned to normal in less than an hour.

“City Water and Light did a great job getting the power back on quickly,” Holliday said. “This is just something we made sure we had in place in case something like this does happen, especially since we are in severe weather season.”

Kevan Inboden with City Water and Light said a line went down near the intersection of Washington and Flint, leaving people from Johnson Avenue south to Church Street without power.

"We're not sure what caused the line to come down," he told Region 8 News. "We do know a connector gave way."

Utility crews were able to isolate the issue and restored power with 20 minutes, Inboden said.

In addition to the Election Annex, the outage also affected several local businesses including St. Bernards Heart & Vascular and The Children's Clinic.
