Northwest Airlines negotiations end

says the union
representing its striking mechanics has discontinued negotiations.

A spokesman for the Eagan, Minnesota-based carrier says the national mediation board informed Northwest yesterday of the decision by the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association.

A union spokesman says there are no talks scheduled and refuses to elaborate.

It's unclear if the union might return to bargaining ahead of a Tuesday deadline for replacement mechanics to be hired permanently.

The mechanics have been on strike for more than three weeks. The negotiations had restarted last week after the airline threatened to begin hiring permanent replacement workers tomorrow if no deal is reached.
