Northwest following through on threat to hire replacements for good

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (AP) - Northwest Airlines says it has begun making permanent hires of some of its replacement mechanics.

But spokesman Kurt Ebenhoch wouldn't give any more details, including how many replacements are being hired.

Union mechanics rallied earlier today near the airport, with leaders calling for solidarity. Their strike is in its fourth week.

Meanwhile, Northwest is declining to comment on a New York Times report that both it and Delta Air Lines could file for bankruptcy as early as tomorrow. Ebenhoch says the company's made no decision about bankruptcy.

Northwest has a hub at Memphis International Airport.
