Breakdown: How rare rainbow clouds form

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A rare phenomenon called an iridescent or rainbow cloud was spotted in Georgia this week.

This type of cloud looks like a cloud with a rainbow sitting on top of it--hence the name.

An iridescent cloud is formed when light diffracts around water droplets in a cloud. Typically, we see the rainbow color on the top, outer edge of a cumulus cloud on a hot and humid day after a thunderstorm.
