Family adopts second service dog from Memphis Animal Services

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Now might be the purrfect time to welcome a four-legged friend into your family.

Memphis Animal Services is offering adoptions for just $30 in an effort to ease overcrowding at the facility.

Studies show pet owners live longer lives, and in the case of one local family, shelter pets became their heroes.

Chase Maybrier and his little brother Blake are adorable kids with some specific health needs.  Thanks to two dogs from MAS, Chase and Blake can lead safer, better lives.

"Whenever I come into the animal shelter," said Chase Maybrier, "I get emotional because I see all these dogs without homes.  And it makes me feel sad because they don't have homes at all."

Chase has been to the shelter many times, searching for a pet who was just right for him. His family adopted Link from MAS last year.

The Brittany Spaniel-Golden Retriever mix is now Chase's service dog, specially trained to spot the 9-year-old's heart problems.

"He helps whenever I have seizures," said Chase, "he'll come next to me and bark.  And I love him so much.  Every night he hops in my bed and sleeps with me."

His family returned to MAS this week to adopt a second dog for his younger brother, Blake.

"He's 7 and has severe PTSD," said Chris Higbee, Blake's stepfather.  "This dog is going to be an emotional support dog and we already have a name for her:  Zelda."

Judging by the smiles and the tail wagging, Zelda, a Golden Retriever mix they picked out, already appears to be a good fit. She'll undergo special training just like Link, to provide Blake with companionship and comfort.

To anyone on the fence about welcoming a shelter animal into their home, Chase and his family say go for it.

"Shelter dogs," said Higbee, "can be the most amazing dogs you can ever take home."

"They need homes," said Chase, "because if they don't have homes, they would die.  You should come to the Memphis Animal Shelter to adopt an animal because they need homes so they can live a happy life, and you can live a happy life!"

You can adopt a pet from MAS for $30. Adopt two kittens under 6 months of age for the price of one. The MAS adoption fee covers spay/neuter, vaccinations, micro-chipping, collar and custom ID.
