HOUSTON TX (KTRK/CNN) - A two-year-old boy has died after accidentally shooting himself.

Police say the child found a nine-millimeter pistol, thought to belong to the child's father and shot himself in the head.

The boy, known as "Junior" was taken to the hospital where doctors were not able to save his life

His mother went to the hospital with the boy

The father was briefly detained by police.

But he was later placed in an ambulance, where he pleaded to go tend to his son.

People who know the family, including the father's best friend, are heartbroken.

"I got a son. So, for me to lose mine, it'd kill me. And I just hate to see him going through this you know. It's a very sad time," said a family friend.

Family members and neighbors say the father was a great, hands-on dad.

Police said the shooting is under investigation.

No charges have been filed at this time.

More than half of the 17 people killed when a tourist boat sank on a Branson lake were members of the same Indiana family, and they likely wouldn't have been on the ill-fated trip but for a ticket mix-up.
