Peach Jam Underway in Improved Building

NORTH AUGUSTA, SC (WFXG) -

The 23rd Annual Nike Peach Jam tipped off on July 11th at the Riverview Park Activities Center in North Augusta.

The tournament started at 5 p.m.

Spectators entered through the doors of the new addition to the facility. This building adds two gyms to the tournament area, giving the tournament six courts to play on.

Nike added 12 teams to the tournament because of the improvement, making 52 teams competing overall.

The addition creates more space for patrons to walk around and socialize between games and gives the younger kids the chance to play under the same roof as the older ones.

Parents who have kids playing in different age groups say this new building is a huge help to them.

Kisha Dread said, "Last year I had one son in 17U and one in the 14U, so I had to go back and forth. Having one gym is perfect."

She also added, "It's awesome because you can see any game you want. I can come in here at nine o'clock in the morning and stay until nine o'clock at night and see all the games I want to see without going anywhere."

While some might think the additional space will take away from the large crowd and exciting atmosphere that spectators and players are used to, officials with say that should not be an issue.

Rick Meyer, Director of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism, said, "It gives you space to congregate. If you're in the facility, it's generally the most crowded in between games."

For folks like Travis Techo, assistant coach for Norcross High School, this is good news.

Techo said, "People come to watch great basketball, and that's what's happening here."

He added that part of what makes the basketball so great is the atmosphere in which it's played.

He said, "Last year was super packed with coaches everywhere, and the top railing was shoulder to shoulder....I'm excited to be here this weekend to watch it, and I hope it's packed."

Dread agreed with Techo.

She said, "The kids love it. That's what they live for. They have that atmosphere all the time. So coming here to the championship game, that's the way it's supposed to be. That's the atmosphere people like. So, I'm hoping it happens again."
