LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

The Chickasawhay Ranger District has a new District Ranger who oversees management of 150,000 acres of national forest land.

Vinci Keeler began his role as leader of the northern district of the De Soto National Forest on June 11, according to a U.S. Forest Service news release.

“The Chickasawhay Ranger District has a great reputation within the local community, with the state, and within the Forest Service,” Keeler in a statement. “It’s great to join an exceptional team. It’s an honor to lead the Chickasawhay.”

Keeler previously served as Director of the Sustainable Forestry program at the Center for Heirs’ Property Preservation, a small nonprofit organization in Charleston, South Carolina. He also worked for the U.S. Forest Service from 2001 to 2016 on several different forests in South Carolina, Louisiana, and California, serving leadership positions such as Deputy District Ranger on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest in California and Timber Management Officer on the Klamath National Forest also in California.

"We're pleased to have Vinci to join our leadership team," said National Forests in Mississippi Acting Forest Supervisor Carl Petrick in the news release. "Vinci brings a great deal of experience to the Chickasawhay, including working in different parts of the country. He has an excellent background in collaboration and building partnerships.”

Keeler holds a bachelor's degree in Environmental Science/Natural Resource Management from Tuskegee University.
