JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

Friends and family of a Moss Point woman are mourning her loss after a crash Thursday morning in Jackson County.

Kelsey Smith, 27, died after the vehicle she was riding in struck another vehicle on Highway 90, according to Mississippi Highway Patrol. It happened around 9 a.m. in the Orange Grove community near Haley's Circle.

Smith was in the backseat of a 1999 Ford Expedition, which was driving in the right lane on the highway. Authorities say when the SUV attempted to merge into the left lane, the vehicle's front passenger side struck the rear driver's side of a 1997 Chevy Suburban that was also traveling in the right lane.

The Expedition went off the left side of the highway. When it tried to get back on the road, authorities say the driver over-corrected and the SUV went off the right side of the road, crashing into a tree.

The other three people in the Expedition were treated for minor injuries. Smith, who was the only one not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene, said MHP's Chase Elkins. The 41-year-old man driving the Suburban was also taken to the hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and released.

Elkins said the crash is still under investigation.
