The first week of school in Shelby County has been a success story for Shelby County Schools Transportation Department.
SCS's bus vendor, Durham School Services, has more than enough drivers to fill routes, and those drivers have successfully traversed the county's 340 bus routes.
"Durham implemented a bonus for drivers so right now, we are meeting our benchmark," SCS Transportation Manager Stephen Wherry said.
Still, there's another advancement on the horizon that SCS hopes will make parents even happier: a new app.
The app, Durham Bus Tracker, will allow parents to track their children's bus on their smartphone or tablet. The app is not available quite yet, but school officials hope to have a pilot rolled out by the beginning of next semester.
Two or three yet unnamed schools will get a test version of the app before SCS rolls it out to the entire district.
"We've been pondering this. That's why we're going to pilot it at several schools," Wherry said. "Of course we are a large district. Roughly 1,800 runs, 340 routes. Time is the key. We just want to make sure this tool is good for the district before we put it out."
Wherry hopes to pilot the app at schools in the north and south districts.
