MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - The boy is safe, but the suspect and car are still missing after a man stole a running car with an 11-year-old boy inside, according to Memphis Police Department
The theft happened Wednesday afternoon in Memphis.
A woman called police around 4:45 p.m. to report that her car had been stolen with her son still inside.
The woman said her 11-year-old son was sleeping in the car, which she left running, when she went inside Goodwill.
When she returned from inside the business, her car was gone.
Police dispatched officers to comb the area looking for the car with the 11-year-old inside.
Investigators then got a call from a woman who lives in the Frayser neighborhood who saw the child be let out of the car.
"The lady here on the street saw someone let the child out, knew the child didn't belong on the street, so she called immediately," said MPD Deputy Chief Don Crowe.
Investigators found the child unharmed several miles away. It appeared the car thief kicked him out of the vehicle when they realized he was inside.
The car has not been located. Police said to be on the lookout for a raspberry Toyota RAV4 with Tennessee tag ONF994.
Police are also searching for a man in the video below wanted for questioning in connection to this case. If you recognize him, you're asked to call police.
