OXFORD, MS (WDAM) -
Derrick Nix made a name for himself in the Pine Belt – rushing for over 3,000 yards at Southern Miss.
The 2002 USM grad now mentors two Pine Belt natives at Ole Miss – South Jones grad Scottie Phillips and former PCS Bobcat Isaiah Woullard.
Both backs battle for carries in the Rebel backfield. Head coach Matt Luke said Phillips has “stood out.” The former Braves rushed for over 2,000 yards in two seasons at Jones County Junior College.
"Another instinctive guy but [Phillips] is very light on his feet,” Nix said. “It doesn't take him a lot of time to get going as well. He can get to his top speed right away. When he makes his cuts, he's not slowing down. He's making his cuts full speed. I think that's the attributes he has that are really good."
