MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - The man shot and killed while working at his deceased mother's home was not the intended target, Memphis Police Department said.
John Hizer, 49, was shot and killed on his mother's front porch Sunday at around 3:20 p.m. Hizer spent his childhood at that house on Madewell Street.
Neighbors said they heard several gunshots Sunday afternoon while Hizer was doing work on the home.
WMC Action News 5 spoke to Hizer's brother-in-law, who said Hizer was about to leave the house when he was shot. The home belongs to his mother who passed away last month.
We're told the family is in the process of selling the home and that Hizer was at the residence with another man who was mowing the lawn.
Hizer's brother-in-law describes the father and husband as a kindhearted, hardworking man and someone who would do anything for his family.
Memphis police officers are investigating the case as a homicide.
Hizer's brother-in-law also wanted WMC Action News 5 to share this message.
He hopes people see how much damage violence can cause a family.
He said it's incredibly sad people can't feel comfortable in their own yards during the day.
Officers said nobody is in custody at this time. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH.
