MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Memphis police officers are investigating the shooting death of a father found dead in North Hollywood.
Investigators said the man was shot in his own home on Oakwood Street on Tuesday around 4 a.m.
Officials also said his children were nearby when he was killed.
Neighbors said the victim, who they identified as Fred Gordon, was a staple in the community.
"All I know is my neighbor knocked on my door and told me to come out," said neighbor Lerna Holden.
Holden said her neighbor and friend was shot and killed inside his home in front of his 8-year-old stepdaughter and 2-year-old son.
Gordon's brother said the 35-year-old, known as "Big Fred," worked as a landscaper and was a devoted father.
Other neighbors who didn't want to be identified said he was a staple in this neighborhood, a man who would do anything for you.
"He was a good man," one neighbor said. "That's all I know."
Friends said they can't imagine why anyone would want to hurt Fred Gordon.
"I can't imagine somebody doing something to my neighbor like that," Holden said. "It's hurtful, it's real hurtful. Because he helped me out a whole lot."
No arrests have been made.
Memphis police have not given a description of the suspect, and it is not clear if there is a description or a motive for the shooting.
