MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Southern Heritage Classic Cultural Celebration founder Fred Jones has done it again. Excitement is in full swing for three days of family fun festivities centered around the annual football rivalry between the Jackson State Tigers and the Tennessee State Tigers.
Tailgaters are already lined up along Tiger Lane outside the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium for Saturday's 6 p.m. game. Ticket prices for the end zone cost $23, sideline tickets are $38, and chair back tickets are $53.
The official festivities kick off Thursday at an invitation-only "Classic VIP Party" at 5 p.m. in the Sheraton Memphis Downtown Heritage Ballroom. The event is hosted by Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland. The band Trio Plus will perform.
On Friday, September 7 at 5 a.m., The Tom Joyner Morning Show will have a live broadcast on V101 with Tom Joyner, Sybil Wilkes, Stormy, Mike Evans and Stan Bell at Tiger Lane on the Fairgrounds outside the Liberty Bowl.
At 9 a.m. Friday, there is a free Classic College & Career Fair at the Pipkin Building at Tiger Lane hosted by the City of Memphis Office of Youth Services. Regional college and university representatives will be available to provide information about attending college and employers will be on hand to hire people.
At noon Friday, Jones will host the Classic Coaches Luncheon presented by FedEx in the Sheraton Memphis Downtown Heritage Ballroom. He'll have a Classic salute to JSU head football coach Tony Hughes and TSU head football coach Rod Reed. The special guest speaker is Earl "Butch" Graves Jr., the President and Chief Executive Officer of Black Enterprise. This event is invitation only.
At 8 p.m. Friday, is the Classic Music Festival at Landers Center.
Saturday, September 8 is the big day. The Classic Tailgate begins at 8 a.m. in the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium parking lot and Tobey Park. The theme is "Friends, Football and Food." Premium Tiger Lane, RV and tailgating packages are sold out, but you can park nearby and party-hop.
Starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, the Classic Parade begins. It's presented by the Orange Mound Parade Committee as a salute to the Southern Heritage Classic. University of Memphis Men's Basketball coaches Penny Hardaway and Tony Madlock will be the parade grand marshals. The parade, featuring area high school marching bands, will head along Park Avenue, from Haynes Street to Airways Boulevard.
At the same time, the Classic/NIKE Kids 3K starts at the National Civil Rights Museum on Mulberry Street in Downtown Memphis. The run/walk is for ages 6-14.
The "Glitz & Glamour" Classic Fashions & Brunch happens at 11 a.m. at the Crown Plaza East located at 2625 Thousand Oaks Blvd. The event is presented by the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc.-Memphis Chapter. Tickets cost $50.
The Southern Heritage Classic Football Game kicks off at 6 p.m. at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. Tickets for the big football rivalry featuring Jackson State and Tennessee State are $53, $38 or $23, plus service charges.
The AutoZone Halftime Show features JSU's Sonic Boom of the South and TSU's Aristocrat of Bands, followed by the Classic 5th Quarter, which is a grand finale for the Southern Heritage Classic football game featuring a battle of the bands.
Be sure to bring a poncho to the game and umbrellas to the tailgating events. Rain could be in the forecast.
