U of M immigrant student indicted

A federal grand jury has indicted a University of Memphis student in whose apartment F-B-I agents say they found $2,500 in pilot gear. The indictment accuses 29-year-old Mahmoud Maawad of using a phony Social Security number to register at the university. Prosecutors say Maawad also used the card for I-D when he was accused of selling beer to a minor. Federal agents raided his apartment on September ninth after finding out Maawad had tried to buy $3,000 dollars worth of training equipment and an airline pilot's uniform on an empty bank account. Agents say Sporty's Pilot Shop planned to deliver the order in eight shipments, but canceled the last three when they weren't paid. Maawad came to the U-S on a student visa, but agents say he's been here for at least four years illegally.
