Murder case bound over to grand jury

KINGSTON, Tenn. (AP) - A judge in Kingston this morning bound over to a grand jury first-degree murder charges against George and Jennifer Hyatte, accused in a deadly courthouse escape.

The hour-long hearing featured one witness -- Larry Harris -- who was one of two prison guards escorting George Hyatte to a van after an August ninth court appearance.

His partner was Wayne "Cotton" Morgan, who was shot to death during the escape.

Harris said he emptied his 38-caliber revolver at the Hyattes, then pulled his fallen comrade's pistol from its holster and fired five more shots.

Harris says he was grazed by one shot fired by Jennifer Hyatte.

The judge denied bond for Jennifer Hyatte as a flight risk.

The Hyattes turned up in Erlanger, Kentucky, and paid a cab driver to take them to Columbus, Ohio. Alerted by another cabbie to who they might be, the driver called police and the couple were arrested without violence.
