Sheriffs crackdown on Highway 385 speeding

The only thing faster than the traffic on Highway 385 Monday was the pace at which Shelby County Sheriff's deputies were writing tickets.

Deputies issued dozens Monday afternoon during a saturation near Winchester. They say one problem here is a misconception of the speed limit. According to the department, many people think the speed limit on 385 is 70 miles per hour. Actually, some stretches of the road run at 55 miles per hour.

Sgt. Pete Peterson said Monday speeds range much faster than that. Many cars are clocked at more than 80 miles per hour.

"It's a little scary at times," he said.

Geoff Falk said cars travelling at the speed limit on the road might as well stay in the slow lane.

"I do notice that it seems like people get upset with people doing the speed limit," he said, "and they do seem to go too fast."

Too fast these days on 385 means a good chance of slowing down for an officer with a radar gun.
