Memphis rated deadliest city for child pedestrians

The Memphis metropolitan area was the most dangerous for young pedestrians in report issued by Safe Kids Worldwide, an international organization focused on preventing accidental injuries to children.

Safe Kids held an awareness campaign Wednesday, which was International Walk to School Day, near Grahamwood Elementary School.  The group's goal is to bring this number down.

Some of the problems facing metropolitan Memphis include crosswalks that are in poor condition, drivers who often fail to yield to pedestrians, and drivers not paying attention to posted speed limits.

"We fought last year to have a crosswalk down here in the middle of the street," said Mike Donnell, parent of a Grahamwood student. "We finally got it, but we have parents and people who will just fly through a school zone and not pay attention to what's going on."

In an effort to curb the problem, traffic enforcement departments in the greater Memphis area are planning to put more patrols in school zones.

Safe Kids also said it's not enough to teach kids to cross the streets safely.  They need help from drivers, parents and the government.
