Bar association cuts U-of-M slack on law school upgrade

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The American Bar Association says the University of Memphis law school remains out of compliance for continued accreditation. But the A-B-A has acknowledged the university's progress and will meet with university officials next October.

The sanctioning body earlier this year threatened to lift the aging law school's accreditation.

The A-B-A said in a recent letter it wants a response by the university by the middle of August with plans for a new law school building and what the Legislature has done to pay for it.

University of Memphis officials hope to renovate space in the Customs House downtown for the law school.

Law School Dean Jim Smoot says everyone involved wants to put the law school downtown.
