Missing persons case turns into murder investigation

Shelby County search and rescue volunteers spent Sunday afternoon combing the Wolf River from Kennedy Park to the Mississippi. They are looking for the body of Taj Rafiq Muhammed-Scott.

His wife reported him missing March 12. Investigators believe Muhammed-Scott's body was dumped off a boat ramp the March 11 after he was abducted from a nearby apartment and shot to death.

Police say Muhammed-Scott's death was gang related.

Investigators say finding his body is important to their case but more important to his family.

"It's extremely important to them and to us," said Lt. Joe Scott of the Memphis Police Department's Homicide Bureau. "That's why we're out here and we're going to do everything that's humanly possible. Use all the resources we have."

Police charged three men with first degree murder in the case. A fourth man faces a lesser charge and a fifth suspect also face charges.
