No new incinerator on President's Island

A controversial radioactive waste company can continue to operate on President's Island. RACE can also operate a storage and distribution facility on Trigg Avenue, but, as part of a compromise reached during last night's city council meeting, the company can not build a new incinerator. That plan has been at the center of debate for months. Some claim low-levels of radioactive waste pose health risks. But even the most adamant opponents praised the compromise.

"What we got today is what we've wanted for eight months--not allowing the incinerator," said RACE opponent the Reverend Ralph White.

Some 200 RACE employees were concerned about the future of their jobs. Company officials say the compromise means those jobs will be secure.
