Shelby County releases list of flu shot locations

Flu Season is Coming and Time for Shots

MEMPHIS, TN - The Memphis and Shelby County Health Department wants to remind citizens in the priority groups that now is the time to come in for influenza (flu) shots.  Since the first announcement of the availability of vaccine, the response of individuals coming to the Public Health Clinics for flu shots has been lower than expected.

At this time the vaccine is available to the tier priority groups defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and includes:

  • individuals sixty-five (65) years of age or older,
  • individuals with chronic health conditions including heart disease, kidney disease, lung disease, diabetes, anemia and other blood disorders,
  • residents of long-term care facilities,
  • ages 2-64 years with chronic health conditions,
  • children aged 6-23 months,
  • pregnant women,
  • health care personnel who provide direct patient care,
  • household contacts and out-of-home caregivers of children aged less than six (6) months, and
  • all individuals greater than six months of age who have been displaced by Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita that are living in group settings.

Additional vaccine is expected to be available Monday, October 24 in the Health Department?s Public Health Clinics for other individuals that are not in the priority group.  At this time the vaccine is free for those seniors covered by Medicare and $17.00 for all others.  With receipt of the next shipment of vaccine cost will be increased to $20.00 for those individuals not covered by Medicare due to the increased supply and administrative costs of the Health Department.
