Tower Automotive plans to close Tenn. plant, cut 290 jobs

GRANITE CITY, Ill. (AP) - Car parts supplier Tower Automotive says it plans to close its plant in Milan by the end of next year, with the loss of nearly 300 jobs.

Tower, which also will close a plant in Granite City, Illinois, declared bankruptcy earlier this year.

Tower makes auto body structures and suspension components for every major automaker and is a major supplier to Ford. It had more than 12-thousand employees when it filed for bankruptcy, but has laid off hundreds of them.

The Novi, Michigan-based company cited lower auto production volume and high steel prices in seeking bankruptcy protection in February.
