Donations to help storm victims may have reduced other giving

PINE BLUFF, Ark. (AP) - Some Arkansas charities say their funding may be harmed because so much money has been given to help local groups cope with hundreds of refugees from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Spokesmen for several Jefferson County charitable organizations say they've seen a decline in donations normally earmarked for other relief efforts -- such as aid to fire victims, senior citizens and groceries for the needy.

The Jefferson County Chapter of the Salvation Army is faced with a bigger task this year as Thanksgiving and Christmas approach. Organizers say the number of families in the county that get assistance from the group has doubled, but that people have been generous and normal donations aren't down.
