Homeowner blames oil leak on MLGW transformer

A Memphis woman is blaming MLGW after a substance spill in front of her house.  The spill apparently leaked from a transformer. Homeowner Pam McGaha says she didn't know what it was at first.

"I looked outside and saw my car, which is usually parked right here, covered in oil," McGaha said.

She finally figured out the oil was dripping from the transformer above.

"It's a noxious, oily, dark, foul oil," she said. "All over the car, inside and out."

Pam and her husband John tried to clean it up, and got it all over themselves in the process. Their car is still stained.

"The fire department came out here and made John and I immediately shower," McGaha said. "They kept everyone far away from the spill area."

But the spill remained, so McGaha called MLGW.

"They came out with some sort of kitty litter substance, spread it all over this spill and swept it up," she said, "and I thought everything was going to be fine.

Three trips later, the spill is still there. According to McGaha, it bubbles up on hot days.

She submitted a bill for damages to MLGW totaling $398. In reply got this letter saying:

"There is no indication that the transformer in front of your home failed due to human error on MLGW's part...We must respectfully deny your claim."

And while that will cost McGaha, she is more concerned that there may be a health hazard right in front of her home.
