Eight people test positive for TB at Horn Lake school

HORN LAKE, Miss. (AP) - Eight people among students and staff at Horn Lake Intermediate School have positive skin tests for tuberculosis infection, according to health officials.

Health Department officials have said that a positive test indicates infection but not the disease. Those who tested positive will receive a chest X-ray at Health Department expense on Monday. The skin test was administered on Tuesday to 707 students and 100 faculty members.

Health officials say since infection has an incubation period, all of the students and staff members who received a negative result from Tuesday's testing will receive a second skin test between Thanksgiving and the start of the Christmas holidays.

T-B is a bacterial infection that can cause lung problems. The disease can be serious if left untreated.

The testing was ordered this past week after an unidentified person at the school tested positive for the infection.
