New trial begins for McNairy County sheriff

SELMER, Tenn. (AP) - McNairy County Sheriff Tommy Riley is on trial again, but only after prosecutors dropped two of the four charges against him.

Riley is accused of official misconduct and facilitating an escape from his jail.

Prosecutors say he released an inmate almost eight months early after she reportedly became pregnant by a jailer.

That jailer, Johnny Carter, is serving a six-month sentence after pleading guilty to having sex with the inmate and also bringing her cigarettes and drugs in jail.

Riley's first trial ended in a hung jury last March. Prosecutors dropped without explanation charges against Riley of tampering with government records and making a false report.
