New Orleans evacuee killed in Memphis

Police say he originally came to Memphis seeking refuge. But Samuel Hill ended up dead.

"We have no clue on a motive or who may have done it," says Memphis Police Sgt. Vince Higgins.

Hill, a native of Harvey Louisiana and hurricane evacuee, was shot late Tuesday night in the parking lot of the Oakview apartments at Lamar & Kimball.

"At some point, he did stay in these apartments, but his family had moved away," says Higgins.

There's no word on what Hill was at the complex or what he was doing before getting shot. Police were alerted by a lady who saw a man laying in the parking lot. Hill wasn't able to tell them anything. He later died during surgery at The Med.

"At this point, it's just a sad situation," says Higgins.

And while it's too late to save Samuel Hill, police are working to catch his killer. But they admit, little evidence and fewer leads will not make it easy.

"We have no witnesses," says Higgins. "And right now we're desperately in need of the publics help in trying to solve this murder," he adds.

It's the murder of a man who survived a hurricane but could not survive the often mean streets of Memphis.
