New security procedures in effect at the Shelby County Criminal Justice Center

The next time you visit the Shelby County Criminal Justice Center, get ready to see some changes.

A new Homeland Security plan went into effect Monday.  From now on getting in and out of the building will be a lot different.

Signs are going up around the CJC to show you the new entrances and exits.  Doors now are either in or out. Some are for employees and others are for the public.

The changes caught a number of people by surprise.

Sheriff Mark Luttrell said concerns about terrorist attacks and a recent court house shooting in Atlanta sparked his desire to beef up security.

The centerpiece of the new security procedures will be x-ray machines, much like the ones you see at the airport.  Homeland security plans are also being worked out for the county's courthouse and administration buildings.

Officials hope to phase everything in during the next several weeks.
