"Guru of Education" speaks to DeSoto County teachers

Doctor Harry Wong won't talk about what's wrong with today's classrooms. He wants to tell you what's right.

"What most teachers think teaching is, 'I go in there and I do a lesson and when something goes wrong I discipline them.' That's it," he said. "I'm here to teach them one more thing: that's how you structure and organize a classroom so you get the kids to work and produce."

DeSoto County Schools spent $5,000 to bring Dr. Wong to the DeSoto County Civic Center. Superintendent Milton Kuykendall said the district was lucky to have him.

"To have a successful school district, you've got to hire the very best teachers you can and then you've got to train them," he said. "Dr. Wong is the guru of education."

The DeSoto County School District believes so strongly in Dr. Wong's philosophies, that the district bought every new teacher a copy of his book, "The First Days of School."

Between 6,000 and 7,000 teachers and administrators turned out for the motivational speech. Most of them were from DeSoto County Schools, teachers from at least a dozen other school districts were represented.
