New state law restricts trucks to far right lanes

Tractor-trailers using Tennessee highways face new restrictions on which lanes they can use beginning this week.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation sent out a release today to alert drivers that on highways with three or more lanes, trucks are being restricted to the two right lanes.

The restrictions were passed earlier this year by the General Assembly.

T-DOT is installing signs where the restrictions would apply. The limits do not apply to vehicles that are passing or to buses.

Earlier this year, the state agreed to requests from Hamilton, Knox and Shelby counties to reduce truck speed limits in those areas to 55 miles-per-hour to help control air pollution.
