Jury convicts former deputy of lesser murder charge

DRESDEN, Tenn. (AP) - A Weakley County jury has convicted a former county sheriff's deputy of a lesser murder charge.

Claudell Carpenter had been charged with first-degree murder, but jurors opted for convictions for second-degree murder and felony murder.

Carpenter forced his way into his estranged wife's apartment and shot Joe Martin at least eleven times after finding Martin and Rene Carpenter together in the same bedroom.

Felony murder allows parole after 51 years of the sentence are served.

Carpenter and his estranged wife have two daughters. Martin was the father of three boys.

District Attorney General Tommy Thomas says yesterday wasn't a happy day for anyone, noting there are now five children who will grow up without fathers.
