Police shoot suspect after attempted robbery

What started out as a burglary at a strip mall ended with a police shooting.
According to police, officers responded to an alarm at the Smoker's Shop on Appling in the early Friday morning.  When they arrived on the scene, they found Dennis Hawkins smashing his way into the tobacco store through a wall.

Police said the suspect walked into the building through an unlocked door in a neighboring empty store. Then he broke through two walls to get into the Smoker's Shop.

Officials said when an officer approached Hawkins, he attacked that officer with a sledgehammer.  The officer shot Hawkins twice. The suspect ran out of shop and down the street, and then collapsed at a gas station, where he was arrested.

The officer, Robert Young, walked away with minor injuries.

Young is a 16 year veteran of the force.  He has been relieved of duty, pending an investigation of the incident.
