George Hyatte arraigned, trial set for next August

KINGSTON, Tenn. (AP) - A judge in Kingston has set August eighth as the trial date for George Hyatte, charged with first-degree murder in the killing of a prison guard outside the Roane County Courthouse last summer.

Hyatte entered no plea at a hearing Monday morning.

The trial date is one day short of a year from the killing.

Hyatte and his wife, Jennifer Hyatte, are accused of killing guard Wayne "Cotton" Morgan as the victim and another guard were escorting George Hyatte to a prison van following a court hearing.

Jennifer Hyatte has also been indicted on a first-degree murder charge and is scheduled to be arraigned November 21st.

George Hyatte spoke up during the morning's brief hearing, complaining to the judge about his attorney, saying he wasn't being "fairly and efficiently represented." The judge took no action on the complaint.
