Hustler restaurant may open in Memphis

Porn peddler Larry Flynt is most famous for his XXX Hustler magazine. Now he wants to open a restaurant chain with the same name. Company officials have targeted Memphis, and say Beale Street would be ideal.

"We want to give them a new version of Hooters," says Flynt. "A lot less hooter and a little more beef," he adds.

Like Hooters, Hustler Bar & Grille would feature a scantily-clad wait staff. Unlike Hooters, there would be memorabilia from Flynt's pornographic past. Some already find the concept un-appetizing.

"It's going in the wrong direction, as far as women are concerned anyway," says Lucy Adams.

Not everyone is opposed to Larry Flynt's plan. There are some who support him, including a friend made on the set of "The People vs. Larry Flynt." Judge D'Army Bailey played a judge in the Memphis-made movie.

"We say we want to be a world-class city," says Bailey. "Certainly, Larry Flynt and Hustler has multiple businesses in cities across America," adds Bailey.

But he knows many people can't get beyond what some consider Flynt's sleazier side.

"We have to be open-minded and broad-minded and give a person a chance," says Bailey.

One thing's for sure. Larry Flynt does not shy away from controversy. He may just have another battle on his hands.

Action News 5 tried to get a comment from the Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Beale Street Merchants Association, and Performa, the group that owns Beale. Nobody was interested in talking on camera about Larry Flynt or his restaurant.

As for Flynt, Memphis isn't the only city on his list. Plans are already underway for Hustler restaurants in Las Vegas, L.A., and Miami.
