Adrian Rogers, former Southern Baptist president, dies at age 74

Dr. Adrian Rogers passed away early Tuesday morning. Dr. Adrian Rogers passed away early Tuesday morning.

Dr. Adrian Rogers, who led a conservative turn of the Southern Baptist Convention a quarter-century ago, died in Memphis this morning. He was 74.

A posting on Rogers' Web site says he died of cancer and pneumonia.

Rogers served as pastor of Bellevue Baptist Church for three decades as the church grew from about nine-thousand members to about 28-thousand.

He preached his farewell sermon in March.

Rogers' 1979 election to the presidency of the Southern Baptist Convention proved a watershed as the 16 million member Christian group took a theological and political turn to the right.

Leaders of the faith have since pushed hard against abortion rights, homosexuality and women pastors.

Rogers also was elected president of the S-B-C in 1986 and 1987.
