Rape suspect charged with murder

A rape suspect who was on the run for nearly three years was in jail Tuesday.

Steve Taylor turned himself in, knowing that police were looking for him in connection to a shooting death at the Wingood Apartments.

On November 6th, Memphis Police were called to apartment number 4 on Wingood Circle, for what appeared to be suicide. A neighbor discovered Adrian Scullark lying in the living room with a gun in his hand and a wound to the chest.

Lt. Joe Scott of the Memphis Police Department said something didn't seem right.

"In this case, the physical evidence, and some statements that were obtained, just didn't really match," he said.

The medical examiner could not give a definitive ruling that the cause of death was suicide, but investigators discovered that Steve Taylor had been in the apartment with the victim. Taylor had an outstanding warrant from 2002 on a child rape case involving a female victim under the age of 13.

Police arrested Taylor on Tuesday, just nine days after the shooting.

Lt. Scott said Taylor and Scullark were friends, and investigators are convinced there was not intent to kill.

"He wasn't mad at him or anything, there was no fight or argument," Scott said. "He was playing with a gun and shot him."

Now, in addition to a child rape charge, Taylor faces a charge of negligent homicide.
