Wharton says park sales should be looked at carefully

Shelby County Mayor AC Wharton is speaking out against one of Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton's ideas.

You may recall a couple of weeks ago, Herenton suggested the city sell some of its parks. Mayor Wharton does not want Shelby County to sell off any of its parks without taking a look at all of the county's real estate.

Action News 5 caught up with the mayor at a Boy Scout food drive today.

Wharton is asking the county to put together a comprehensive plan for Shelby County's property needs. This came up because the county was getting ready to sell one of its parks when a school right next door was in need of more land.

Wharton says there may be cases where the county should sell off some of its parkland, but it should only be done as part of a bigger plan.

"I think you ought to approach it on a strategic basis. Look at your inventory. Let me take care of my house," said Wharton.

Mayor Wharton says parks and schools are the two things that anchor a community. He also says parks are the best way to attract developers.
