Shelby prosecutor adds to list he won't plea bargain

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Shelby County prosecutor Bill Gibbons is adding two more violent crimes to his list of "no deals" violations.

Gibbons initiated the policy in 1997, applying to first-degree and second-degree murder, aggravated and especially aggravated robberies and rape involving a weapon.

Now, the prosecutor is adding carjacking and attempted first-degree murder to the list of crimes his office will refuse to negotiate pleas for.

Gibbons says the number of aggravated assaults have spiked at more than 200 a month this year and says many are really attempted murders. The number of carjackings this year is expected to end ten percent higher than last year.
