Dirty bomb suspect indicted

WASHINGTON (AP) - Attorney General Alberto Gonzales says Jose Padilla was a member of a "violent terrorist support cell" and went overseas "to train as a terrorist."

An indictment was unsealed Tuesday. It charges Padilla with conspiring to "murder, kidnap and maim" people overseas. It also says he and four co-defendants (Adham Amin Hassoun, Mohammed Hesham Youssef, Kifah Wael Jayyousi and Kassem Daher) conspired to provide material support to terrorists abroad.

In a Washington news conference, Gonzales said Padilla went abroad for training with the "intention of fighting in violent jihad."

Gonzales says he's asked the Defense Department to transfer Padilla to Justice Department control. Gonzales says the case will go to trial next September.

Padilla was arrested at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport in 2002 after returning from Pakistan. Officials had accused him of plotting to use a "dirty bomb." He's been held since then as an "enemy combatant," without being charged -- a situation that prompted a challenge in the Supreme Court.
